In a video published at the end of last week, Youtubeur Akaki Kuumeri features one of his own creations: the DualSense, the PS5 controller, revisited so that it can be used with one hand. He uses Rocket League, Yakuza 0, and Grand Theft Auto V as examples to illustrate his creation. Thanks to a 3D printer, he built a sort of rubber suit, connected to “a shoe“behind the controller. With a support (table, thigh, magazine …) the movements of the right hand move the joystick, which in turn makes the left joystick move. What about the L1 and L2 buttons, located on the left of the controller? Also thanks to his 3D printer, Akaki Kuumerin built a system allowing to migrate the two keys alongside R1 and R2, the right triggers: “I made the system compatible so that players can aim with L2 and shoot with R2“.
Akaki Kumeri explains that he had the idea of such a system when he wanted to play It Take Two, game of the year 2024 that can only be done for two. He therefore built this material with a right-handed version and a left-handed version, approach which he details at the end of his video. Moreover, the Youtubeur is not at his first attempt: he has already manufactured joystick adapters for PlayStation 5, and even cockpits adapted to virtual reality.
If this “equipment” for a one-handed controller is only available to those who have a 3D printer at home, such a creation could open the door to other innovations of the genre. Accessibility is an important subject in video games, where there is still a lot of work to do. Despite everything, many avenues of hope are opening up day after day. This is evidenced by the releases of Psychonauts 2 and more recently Forza Horizon 5, considered the most accessible Xbox game ever created.
