We told you about it before the new year: three days after its theatrical release, the animated film Jujutsu Kaisen 0 displays thundering results. In fact, they generated 2.6 billion yen in revenue and therefore achieved the second best start of a film in Japan and this just behind Demon Slayer: The Infinity Train. At the time, Toho hoped to make 10 billion yen in revenue (76.5 million euros). A figure almost reached according to Crunchyroll, which relayed the box office figures following the weekend of January 15-16: it is 8.57 billion yen that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has made in three weeks or six billion all round. A performance that has therefore been standardized in recent weeks: ten days ago, it was reported at 5.6 billion yen. So around 2.8 billion yen (19 million euros) are generated each week. The objective of 10 billion is therefore almost assured for Toho: a symbolic level synonymous with the top 40 of the most lucrative films in Japan.
Without being able to explain concretely what seduces the spectators in the film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, we can at least give some explanations. As a reminder, Jujutsu Kaisen is a manga that is a hit in Japan: it is the work that has sold the most volumes on the archipelago during the year 2024. It takes up the classic codes of the manga shonen, a genre intended for young boys, in which a teenager with supernatural powers will have to bear the fate of the entire Earth on his own shoulders. A fictional universe… already created by Gege Akutami! It’s in a short story called Tokyo School of Exorcism that the mangaka describes it for the first time. Success obliges, he puts his pencil back to work and creates Jujutsu Kaisen. The manga is just as popular, especially since the adaptation made by Mappa (Shingeki No Kyojin Season 4, God of High School) propels the work to new heights.
But what relationship with Jujutsu Kaisen 0 ? Well the film, released during the holidays in Japan, is the direct adaptation of Tokyo School of Exorcism. The film was probably renamed for the occasion so as not to lose readers and to respect the temporality of the works: made before Jujutsu Kaisen, Tokyo School of Exorcism also takes place before the events of the latter. What about a release in France? No information was given as to a distribution of the Hexagon adaptation. We cross our fingers anyway and we will remain optimistic hoping for the same treatment as Demon Slayer: The Infinity Train.
