The Witcher on Netflix: An adaptation of video games to be expected? Here is the official response

Xbox One

For those who may not have known, The Witcher is originally a literary saga initiated by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. After several collections of short stories, the author has published several novels which constitute the bulk of the adventures of Geralt of Rivia. Video games follow on from the novels and continue the story of the witcher. If there is still a lot of material to adapt, the question of a possible transcription of video games in audiovisual format remains legitimate, especially since the games have widely popularized the saga with the general public. And to this question precisely, the showrunner of the series has a very clear opinion:

Once you’ve adapted all the novels, will you focus on the video game saga?

I do not think so. Video games are also an adaptation of books. I feel like if we started adapting the video games that adapted the books, we’d be in a weird whirlwind of adaptations. The games do what they do incredibly well, and I don’t have to walk on their flower beds at all. I much prefer to stick to our stories and books. – Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (producer)

Lauren Schmidt Hissrich therefore confirms that no video game adaptation project is in the pipeline. However, we can safely say that The Witcher license will be widely exploited by Netflix in the years to come.

We have already had the right to the series, then to the animated film The Wolf’s Nightmare. We also know that a prequel series called Blood Origin is in the works, as well as a project aimed at children. Netflix does not intend to stop there, but on the contrary to exploit an otherwise rich lore. Once novels and other news are adapted, video games could become more attractive. For the moment in any case, nothing is planned on the side of the SVOD platform.

Season 2 of The Witcher is now available on Netflix.
