Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart continues the narrative thread introduced in previous installments of the Insomniac Games franchise, which focuses on the mystery of the Lombaxes, a humanoid species with the appearance of felids which includes Ratchet, one of the protagonists of the game. Clank, Ratchet’s best friend, tries to offer him a Dimensionator to allow him to join the other Lombaxes, who disappeared in another dimension when Ratchet was just a baby. However, before Ratchet can use it, Dr. Nefarious – the arch-nemesis of the duo who was previously untraceable – reappears and seizes the weapon. Ratchet tries to stop him but accidentally causes the appearance of numerous dimensional faults, and the three characters find themselves absorbed in a portal intended to take them into a dimension where Dr. Nefarious is all-powerful. Ratchet and Clank end up being separated, and Clank stumbles upon a mysterious lombax named Rivet, who seems oddly interested in the sudden appearance of dimensional rifts …
