PS5: many exclusives to come, the boss of PlayStation is teasing

If there’s one thing Sony seems to understand, it’s the importance of its exclusives, many of which proved formidable during the PS4 era. We can easily cite Spider-Man, which has exceeded twenty million units sold, Horizon: Zero Dawn (more than ten million sales in two years) or even God of War and its 19.5 million buyers in August 2024. As a bonus, the newly unveiled scores, that is to say yesterday, of Ghost of Tsushima prove that the IP portfolio of the Japanese manufacturer is supported by a potential monster. Determined to make the most of it, it seems that the firm still has a number of surprises in stock.

At the very least, this is the teasing that Jim Ryan, the man at the head of Sony Interactive Entertainment (or the entire video game branch of the Japanese giant), tackled at the famous CES Las Vegas 2024 fair yesterday. The main thinker of PlayStation took the stage and took the opportunity to confirm that seventeen of its studios are currently working on first-party games.… And that inevitably means that a great many exclusives are currently in the works – some of which must have already been announced.

That doesn’t mean, however, that seventeen exclusives are behind the scenes: We remind you that studios like Nixxes or Valkyrie, acquired in 2024, are not dedicated to the creation of video games, but respectively to PC ports and to the support of main studios. Conversely, some entities are quite capable of developing several projects simultaneously : we think for example of Insomniac Games are productivity is no longer to prove, or of Naughty Dog who, in addition to working on a new multiplayer game, was working on a remake of the first The Last of Us. difficult to estimate the precise number of first party games in the boxes.

Finally, comes the question of the medium concerned. Obviously, the PS5 should be the main target of all its studios, but it is not the only one in the PlayStation sector : not only the PS4 is still there although at the end of its life, but the PlayStation VR2 (which was officially detailed yesterday, more info here) is strongly to be considered as well. So to speak, Guerilla Games has just recently confirmed the development of a new Horizon game for the virtual reality headset! As a bonus, let’s underline Sony’s desire to bring its franchises to mobiles… and you have a good glimpse of the near future of the company.

Remember that for his part, Microsoft has gone to great lengths with numerous acquired organizations for a total of 22 entities within Xbox Games Studios, including Bethesda, a monster bought for 7.5 billion dollars. The future looks strong.
