Wordle: the new game that obsesses the Internet! How to play, French version ... Our complete guide

Everyone’s talking about it on social media, but what is Wordle? Created by British engineer John Wardle in 2024, Wordle is a game with a concept similar to games like Lingo and Motus. Inspired by his wife’s love for crosswords, Wardle first created this game for his family and friends during the first lockdowns of 2024, before putting it online for the public last October. Since then, the game has become a real phenomenon on social networks and is increased from less than 100 players to more than 300,000.

To be able to play Worlde, you don’t need an application, console, or specific hardware: just go to this page. The principle of the game is simple: every day you have to guess a 5 letter word in 6 tries or less. The word is the same for everyone, and the rules are just as simple: letters that appear in gray are not in the word, those that appear in yellow are but are not in the right place, and the green letters are in the right place. You have access to a numeric keypad at the bottom of the page to enter your suggestions.

Once your game is over, whether you won it or not, you have the possibility to share your results and even your statistics on social networks, because Wordle takes into account your progress with each participation. But beware, the game is only in English, then you will need some knowledge of the subject to get started. There is however helpers listing the different 5-letter words in Shakespeare’s language on the net, like here, the or on this page.

If you are interested in the concept of Wordle but English is not your forte, there is an alternative: Sutom, which works basically the same way, with a few details, because the rules are similar to the famous TV show Motus. Developped by @Jonamaths on Twitter, Sutom is directly inspired by Wordle and designed for French speakers.

In Sutom, the proposed words are not limited to 5 letters but change every day. Letters not in the word have a blue background, letters that are in the word but in the wrong place are surrounded by a yellow circle, and properly placed letters are surrounded by a red square. In addition, as in the TV show, you must imperatively play using the initial letter which is imposed on you (and “offered”). Sutom also allows you to share your results on social networks to compare with your friends..

And you, are you interested in this kind of games? Have you ever tried Wordle or Sutom? What did you think of it? Tell us all in the comments!
