NVMe WD_BLACK SN850 SSD compatible with PS5, get 30% off before sales

PS 5

Star product of the computer world, in the still tight absence of graphics cards, SSDs have had a good and rich year if we are to believe the figures from the various manufacturers and the ever lower prices offered to us.

While the Gen 5 SSDs are already starting to show up and they should be one of the attractions of CES 2024 which is due to open this Wednesday, January 5 in Las Vegas, Intel and Samsung have not awaited the traditional high mass of electronics to make some demonstrations of the incredible power of the new PCI Express 5.0 ports.

If the best Gen 4 SSDs like the Firecuda 530 or the WD_BLACK SN850 go up to 7300 and 7000 MB / s respectively in reading, the Gen 5 SSD PM1743 provided by Samsung for the common tests with Intel, was able to reach during this demonstration the A record 13,788 MB / s, or nearly 14 GB / s. Colossal! Everything was supported by an RTX 3080 and a Core i9-12900K. We dare not even imagine the price of this incredible config.

Normally offered at € 169.99 in its 500 GB version and € 299.99 in its 1 TB version, the NVMe WD_BLACK SN850 Heatsink SSD, with integrated heatsink, is now available at Amazon for € 119.99 or € 206.99.

Soon we will therefore have 3 generations of NVMe SSDs that will coexist, Gen 3, Gen 4 and therefore Gen 5. We can already hear from here the sighs of some, completely lost in all these common names.

Remember one thing, if you just want to enjoy your PS5 by increasing its storage capacity, you first need a Gen 4 NVMe SSD, and then that it be able to reach at least 5500 MB / s in reading. All this is in practice and it is the guarantee to have the same characteristics as with the internal SSD in the console. In fact, even at 5000 or 4000MB / s, everything will work fine, at least with current games which are all Cross-Gen. Maybe when we finally have really New Gen games, 5500 MB / s will be essential… But that, only the future will tell.

At any rate, the NVMe WD_BLACK SN850 SSD fulfills all the conditions handily since it is capable of reaching 7000 MB / s in reading and 5300 MB / s in writing. Apart from the Firecuda 530, few models currently on the market exceed it. Happiness never comes alone, it is offered here in its “Heatsink” version, understand with integrated heat sink. It is therefore completely ready to use for the PS5. Just plug it in.

How to increase the storage space of the PS5?

There are two ways to increase the storage of your PS5, via an external hard drive (HDD) or via an SSD to insert into your console. However, it is only with an internal SSD that you will be able to launch the games.

How to install an internal SSD on the PS5?

To do this, you need a size 1 Phillips screwdriver. After making sure that the console is unplugged, lay it down and position it in front of you. Remove the cover and then unscrew the cover from the SSD expansion slot. Remove the screws, plug in the SSD and screw it in. All you have to do is close the cover of the space dedicated to the SSD and replace the outer cover. Plug the console back in and follow the instructions in the PS5 format utility so that you can use your new SSD.

Which internal SSDs are compatible with the PS5?

Currently, due to very strict rules for integrating an SSD, only a few PCIe 4.0 models may be suitable. With a heat sink, we will retain the SSD WD_Black SN850, and then, in the category without heat sink, you can count on the Sabrent 2Tb Rocket 4 Plus, the Samsung 980 Pro or the Crucial P5 Plus.
