In Tomb Raider, Lara Croft goes on an expedition for the first time with friends aboard a modern exploration vessel, the Endurance. She is convinced that the fictional island of Yamatai, once ruled by Sun Queen Himiko, lies somewhere on the Devil’s Sea off the coast of Japan. – an area known for its severe storms. It is following one of them that the ship wrecks on an unknown island, where a man captures and confines Lara in a cave. She nevertheless manages to escape, causing the cave to collapse and the man’s death. Alone in the wild, Lara is forced to develop her survival skills in order to hope to find her friends.

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, as she explores a shrine in Mexico where an apocalypse is described, Lara is intercepted by the Order of the Trinity who trapped the cave. She decides to follow them to Peru, worried about the role they will play in this apocalypse. She manages to reach the temple of the goddess Ixchel, and finds there a dagger that gives the power to change the world.. Lara seizes it, mainly to prevent the Order from getting their hands on it, but she is stopped by a Trinitarian, Dominguez, who tells her that the flight of the dagger sparked the apocalypse predicted by the mayans, and that a series of natural disasters will befall the world until the dagger is paired with Ixchel’s silver box to remake the world.
